Quarter Sawn White Oak lumber displays prominent rays. These are also referred to as tiger-rays, ray fleck, ray flakes and fleck patterns. Quarter sawn lumber is cut radially from the bark to the heart producing ribbon figured. Quarter Sawn White Oak Lumber has more figure than other quarter sawn lumbers due is large and wide rays/grain pattern.

Quarter Sawn White Oak has heartwood that can vary in colour from light tan or pale yellow-brown to dark or pale brown, and can have a pinkish tint. The wood usually has straight, open grain, and is medium to coarse in texture. It has more figure than Red Oak and therefore displays more figure. The sapwood is whitish to light brown, and varies in width.

In traditional quarter sawing the log was cut like spokes of a wheel radiating from the heart. This resulted in very stable boards but a considerable amount of waste. Modern quarters awing uses a compromise method to reduce waste.

White Oak Lumber Characteristics

Availability:

Quartersawn white has been in high demand, making the available stock limited and driving pricing up. For the most current information and availability please contact us.

Properties:

White Oak is hard and heavy wood. It has medium crushing and bending strength, and low stiffness. The wood has excellent steam-bending properties and has exceptional resistance to water. It has a moderate blunting effect on cutting edge, but generally works well. The wood planes, turns, bores, mortises, stains and polishes well. Pre-boring is advised for nailing and screwing and it glues satisfactorily.

If your interest in more of the details on how lumber is graded you read all about it in NHLA Rules Book.
